Six Tips for Films for Institutions, Facilities and Research Hubs

1. Start Early. Institutions and facilities are complex, and Research Hubs may include academics and experts who aren’t even in the same building. Planning your hero film at inception forges your identity as a team both internally and externally.

2. Discover your heart. For a strong identity you need to be more than a structural chart or profile shots on a web page. What drives you as a team, what is your unique offering and what should people feel when they interact with you? Simplifying ‘what you do’ is a powerful exercise we can help with.

3. Define your audience. Who are you showing your face to? Funders, service users, policy makers, industry partners or staff? Who needs a top level overview, and who needs more detail?

4. Choose your players. Think who represents your team best for the goal you have in mind. The big boss may unlock funding, but a technician may be the best to give a facility tour. A world leading professor may add authority, but who adds the most passion or the best people facing skills?

5. Have a launch plan. Who is your marketing team? You all have one! All your team members have the power to promote your video, throughout the production stage and beyond. Scheduling reminders to ask them to spread the word by reposting behind the scenes shots as well as the final film, helps build a powerful network, whether or not you choose paid promotion.

6. Maximise your assets. Overview films often generate additional material for repackaging, such as video screen grabs you can use as stills, soundbites you can use for social media clips, and imagery you can use to promote an event. Make sure you own the copyright of any specially shot material!
